Carol Beck - Artist Statement
My art is about energy and light. As an artist, I am drawn to expressing depth and power through simplicity; continually trying to express what feels like pure essence. My desire is for my work to clear a space from normal everyday life by incorporating wide expanses of surface and then engage the eye with fresh, energetic, light-filled colors. I especially enjoy painting images that give the impression of seemingly effortless creation.
My days are filled with what some describe as “a surprising mix of interests” which inspire my work. I begin my day by visiting space on my favorite astronomy internet site offering daily pictures and facts about space. Since school days I have been fascinated with the biochemistry and intricacies of the human cell and continue to be amazed how pictures of cellular activity remind me of deep space and vice versa. Meditation and spiritual study offer me even more fodder for thought, enjoyment, and work. Daily doses of beach time, reading dozens of architecture and design magazines each month, and traveling the world add even more stimulation for my paintings.
Coming Full Circle is my latest series. Returning from an extended stay in Paris, I found myself drawn to the luminescence of colors on pure black backgrounds. Pouring the colors on to the black surface felt so reminiscent of my exuberant self as a child, I couldn’t stop. I simply lost myself in the pure joy and abandon of color and paint. I have come full circle.
I produce my work in my home studio in Florida on Amelia Island where I live just minutes from the beach with my husband, Michael Spicer, businessman and photographer. We both love traveling the world, experiencing different cultures, getting to know people from different countries, and coming home filled with new experiences, colors, sights, and views to incorporate into our new work. Please give us a call and come visit. We would love to meet you and schedule a studio tour with you.
